Render and brick slip finishes

The finish is what you see. It also keeps the weather out of the insulation behind it.

Render

Silicone render

Through-coloured and water-shedding, slow to stain or go green. Fine or coarser textures in a wide range of colours.

Render

Mineral render

Highly vapour-open, a good partner for breathable systems on old solid brick.

Brick

Brick slips

Thin brick faces over the insulation, pointed like a wall. Useful where a brick look must be kept.

Samples

We bring sample boards to the survey so you can judge colours outside, in daylight, against your brick, roof and windows.

Details to choose

  • Plinth band in a darker shade at the base to hide splashback
  • Window surrounds picked out in a second colour
  • Band course between floors on tall rear elevations
  • Brick slips on the ground floor, render above
  • Original features such as brick arches left on show

Finish questions

Will brick slips look like real brick?

They are thin slices of real brick or brick-faced tiles, laid and pointed like a wall, so from the street they read as brickwork. Matching London stock brick exactly is difficult, so we bring samples to compare on site.

Does render need painting?

Silicone render and most mineral renders are coloured through and need no paint. Some mineral finishes are designed to be painted, and we will say if yours is.

Can I mix finishes?

Yes. Brick slips at ground floor with render above, or a darker plinth band, are both common.

Will it stay clean on a busy road?

Silicone finishes shed water and grime better than most. On a main road, a mid-tone such as stone or grey hides traffic film better than brilliant white.
